Your questions, answered.

What are the types of dental insurance plans (PPO DHMO and indemnity)?+

Most dental insurance plans fall into three types. A PPO gives you a network of dentists, so you pay less when you stay in-network, and you can still go out-of-network at a higher cost. A DHMO has you choose a primary dentist in its network, usually with lower premiums and fixed copays, but you need referrals for specialists and there’s generally no out-of-network coverage. An indemnity plan lets you see any dentist, but you often pay upfront and get reimbursed a percentage. Discount dental plans are a fourth option, but they work as a membership, not insurance.

How does dental insurance work?+

You pay a monthly premium, and in return the plan pays part of your dental costs. Most plans cover preventive care like cleanings and exams at or near 100%, basic work like fillings at a lower share, and major work like crowns at a smaller share still. You usually pay a deductible first, and the plan stops paying once you reach its annual maximum. Many plans also have waiting periods for bigger procedures. Because the percentages and limits differ a lot, we’ll compare them side by side before you choose.

How much does dental insurance cost per month?+

It depends on the plan type, your age, your location and the benefits you choose. Many individual plans run roughly $25 to $60 a month, and family coverage costs more. A DHMO usually has the lowest premium, while PPO and indemnity plans cost more in exchange for flexibility. Discount dental plans typically charge a low annual or monthly fee instead of a premium. Remember to look at the deductible and annual maximum too, not just the monthly price.

What is a DHMO and how is it different from a PPO?+

A DHMO (dental health maintenance organization) assigns you a primary dentist inside its network, and that office coordinates your care. Premiums are often low and you pay set copays instead of percentages, but you generally can’t use dentists outside the network and need a referral to see a specialist. A PPO costs more but lets you choose from a larger network and go out-of-network if you accept higher costs.

What does vision insurance cover?+

Most vision insurance plans cover routine eye exams, and many include allowances or discounts for eyeglasses and contact lenses. Some plans offer higher allowances for frames or contacts, but not both in the same year. Medical eye problems such as glaucoma or injury are often handled by your health plan instead. Benefits vary by carrier, so compare the allowance, network and copays before you enroll.

What are the types of vision insurance plans?+

The common types of vision insurance plans are vision benefit plans, which give you an exam and allowances for glasses or contacts for a copay, and discount vision programs, which lower prices at participating providers without paying benefits. Some health or Medicare Advantage plans also include vision as a built-in benefit or rider. Network size and allowances differ by carrier, so it’s worth checking that your eye doctor participates.

Can I buy dental or vision insurance without a health plan?+

Yes. Standalone dental and vision insurance is sold separately from medical coverage, so you don’t need a health plan to enroll. Enrollment windows can depend on how you buy, and some plans have waiting periods or other rules, which we’ll explain upfront. If you have Medicare, remember that Original Medicare generally doesn’t cover routine dental or vision, so a standalone plan can help fill that gap.

Is there dental insurance with no waiting period?+

Yes, some carriers offer dental insurance with no waiting period, though it may apply only to preventive care. Major work and orthodontic insurance often come with waits of several months to a year, and some orthodontic benefits have lifetime limits. Discount dental plans usually have no waiting period at all, since you can generally start using the discounts right away.
