Supplemental health insurance that fills the gaps

STRAIGHTFORWARD ANSWERS

Your questions, answered.

What is supplemental insurance?+

Supplemental insurance is extra coverage you add on top of your main health plan. It doesn’t replace major medical insurance. Instead, it pays a cash benefit when a specific event happens, such as a hospital stay, an accident or a serious diagnosis. Common types include hospital indemnity insurance, critical illness insurance, cancer insurance and accident insurance. Think of it as a cushion for the costs your primary plan doesn’t fully cover.

Why get supplemental insurance when I already have health insurance?+

Because having health insurance doesn’t mean you won’t have bills. Deductibles, copays and coinsurance can add up fast, and a serious illness often means time away from work too. Supplemental health insurance pays you cash to help with those gaps, and income protection insurance can help replace part of your paycheck while you recover. It’s most helpful if you have a high deductible, a family to support, or little savings set aside for an emergency. It isn’t right for everyone, and we’ll tell you honestly if a plan doesn’t make sense for you.

How much does supplemental insurance cost?+

It depends on the type of coverage, the benefit amount you choose, your age, your health and where you live. Some plans cost a modest amount each month, while broader coverage costs more. Higher benefits mean higher premiums, so it’s worth choosing an amount you’d actually need. We’ll show you a few options side by side before you decide, so there are no surprises.

Can I have supplemental insurance with Medicare?+

Yes. Many people with Medicare add supplemental coverage, such as hospital indemnity insurance or critical illness insurance, to help with costs Medicare leaves behind. It’s a different product from a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan, so the two are not the same thing. Eligibility and available plans can depend on your age and state, and we’ll check what you qualify for.

Does supplemental insurance pay me directly or the hospital?+

In most cases it pays you directly, not the hospital or doctor. The benefit usually arrives as a check or deposit, and the payout amount depends on the plan you choose. Many people use the money for treatment costs, travel to specialists, or everyday bills while they recover. Always check which conditions are included before you enroll.

Is accident insurance worth it?+

It can be, especially if you or your family are active, have kids in sports or commute a lot. Accident insurance pays a set benefit after a covered injury, such as a fracture, an ER visit or a hospital stay, and it’s usually one of the more affordable supplemental options. If you already have a high deductible, it can ease the sting of an unexpected bill. If you rarely face that kind of risk and have savings to cover it, you may not need it. Keep in mind that supplemental accident insurance only pays for injuries, not illness.

Are there waiting periods or exclusions with supplemental insurance?+

Often, yes. Many plans have a short waiting period before certain benefits begin, and most exclude pre-existing conditions for a time. Cancer insurance and critical illness insurance in particular may only pay for the conditions named in the policy. We go through these details with you before you sign, so you know what’s covered and when it starts.
